A safety assistant helps the site manager on the construction site and makes sure the safety regulations are met; the law requires whoever carries out construction to appoint one. Maor Academy has 2 tracks: a 128-academic-hour course that needs no experience, and a 45-academic-hour course for people with at least 24 months of experience in construction work. The choice between them depends on the experience you can prove.
Who must appoint a safety assistant?
Section 25(b)(a) of the Labor Inspection (Organization) Law, 1954 requires whoever carries out construction to appoint a safety assistant. The job is to help the site manager on the construction site. The safety assistant works under the site manager and is responsible for making sure all safety regulations are met.
What does a safety assistant do day to day?
The safety assistant plays a central part in supporting the site manager and keeping a culture of safety: from putting safety procedures in place to carrying out checks on site.
Safety is about complying with the law: from verifying workers' training to making sure no minors are on site. A safety assistant must therefore know the law in detail.
What is the difference between the 2 tracks?
- Safety Assistant Course – No Experience Needed: 128 academic hours, including site tours. The course takes place in Or Akiva. Admission requirements: an adult over the age of 18, and willingness to learn and acquire an important profession in the construction industry. Those who pass the final exam are listed as safety assistants in the Safety Administration's registry of service providers.
- Safety Assistant Course for Experienced Construction Workers: 45 academic hours, including a site tour. Admission requirements: age 18 or over, and employer confirmation of at least 24 months of proven experience in building or civil engineering construction work. Graduates receive a safety assistant certificate and are listed in the Safety Administration's registry of service providers.
How do you choose between the tracks?
The deciding question is experience. If you can present employer confirmation of at least 24 months in building or civil engineering construction work, the 45-hour track fits you. Without that experience, or without proof of it, you study in the 128-hour track, which needs no previous experience.

What do you study in a safety assistant course?
The course focuses on the legal framework of safety and on the closed list of subjects set by law. Topics include safety concepts, safety roles on construction sites, the safety assistant's role and legal responsibility, the safety at work regulations (construction work), personal protective equipment, work at height, scaffolding and fencing, tools that require inspection, the checklist, and key dilemmas in the work of the site manager and the safety assistant.
What do you receive at the end of the course?
In both tracks, those who finish successfully are listed in the registry of service providers of the Safety Administration, an arm of the Ministry of Labor. Graduates of the track for experienced workers also receive a safety assistant certificate.
What if you want to move up to managing the site?
The site managers courses have their own experience and schooling requirements and a Ministry of Labor admission committee, all explained in the guide How to become a construction site manager. Questions about the safety assistant course? Use the contact page.
